Equine Reproduction

Every breeding season our goal is to offer our knowledge and experience to help your mare or stallion have a successful year. We take great pride in our ability to care for each horse’s individual reproductive needs and the attention to detail that we give to every client.

We are equally equipped and experienced to handle both cooled and frozen semen breeding options. For your mares, we perform breeding soundness examinations, ultrasound monitored cycles, onsite uterine cytology and cultures, uterine lavage and treatment, as well as advanced procedures such as video hysteroscopy, deep horn insemination, and embryo transfers. For stallions, we are equipped to collect and cool or freeze semen, send off laboratory tests for common venereal diseases,  and ship to breeding facilities.

We look forward to partnering with you for the breeding season and to a new crop of healthy foals in the upcoming year. We are able to fill the needs of both single mare owners and large breeding facilities. Some of the services available for the 2019 breeding season include:

Pre-Breeding Evaluation: Evaluation of the mare to assess fertility may include rectal palpation, ultrasonography, uterine culture, uterine cytology, endometrial biopsy, video endoscopy, as well as other diagnostic procedures.

Stallion Breeding Soundness Examination and Collection: Evaluation of the stallion to determine fertility and quality of semen. We use the latest technology available to produce quality cooled and frozen semen for stallion owners. Training for novice stallions on the dummy mount also available.

Mare Management: Our breeding services work with owners to optimize fertility in their mares. We offer live cover assistance, artificial insemination with fresh, cooled, and frozen semen, and intensive hormone therapy of low fertility mares. Read more.

Embryo Transfers: Mares are bred, flushed for embryo collection, and transferred to recipients at our facility. We can also ship collected embryos to outside breeding facilities for implantation.

Advanced Reproductive Procedures: We provide advanced procedures that may have benefit in managing certain mares and stallions such as: hormone evaluation and therapy, video endoscopy, uterine therapy, low number sperm artificial insemination, and more.

Mare Management

Every year we provide breeding services and fertility management to a large number of mares. We are equipped with both in hospital and portable ultrasound machines to evaluate mares both in the reproductive center and in the field. Below are some of the mare reproductive services we offer:

  • Breeding soundness examinations: reproductive tract ultrasonography, uterine culture and biopsies, videoendoscopy, hormone assays and therapy
  • Artificial insemination: fresh, cooled or frozen semen
  • Sub-fertile mare management: hormonal therapy, uterine lavage, uterine infusions, and laser endometrial cyst reduction.
  • Pregnancy management: ultrasonic pregnancy diagnosis and staging twin reductions, transabdominal fetal monitoring, and ultrasonic placental evaluation.
  • Embryo transfers: embryo harvesting and non-surgical implantation procedures or embryo shipping
  • Reproductive surgery: caslicks, rectal-vaginal tear reconstruction, and caesarian sections.

Mare owners can choose the option of large 12' × 24' stalls, available 24-hour video monitoring systems, or pasture turnout. Mares boarded at our facility for foaling will be monitored by video, which feed directly to our on-site veterinarian. When foaling is imminent, our veterinarian will be by the mare’s side to assist if needed. This eliminates the precious minutes that can be lost during a difficult foaling, thus ensuring both the foal’s and dam’s well being.

In the main hospital we have an ICU unit dedicated to the care of critically ill or compromised foals and their dams. We monitor these neonates with on-site serum chemistry, blood gas analysis, and hematology. Critical foals are watched around the clock and receive procedures, medications, and treatments under the supervision of our neo-natal fellowship trained veterinarian.

Stallion Management

Our reproductive center also offers stallion breeding services. Pacific Crest is able to stand stallions at our facility and assist owners in selecting a stallion management plan and breeding program. We offer owners the choice of fresh, cooled/shipped or frozen semen breeding options. Our program includes collection, semen count evaluation, sperm morphology and motility evaluation, extender evaluation, and freezing and storage. We can train novice stallions to the phantom and can manage sub-fertile stallions.  For the sub-fertile stallions we offer semen concentration to aid in fertility and to increase the viability of shipped semen.

Stallions on the premises each have a 14' × 14' bedded stall with adjacent turnout. . We are also a USDA approved site for collection and international shipment of semen. For stallions that have a significant book each year, we have excellent incentive programs with individualized stallion contracts.
